Tourism Promotions Board Supports Film Tourism with " Cine Turismo"




The Philippines is known for its beauty and unique charisma. In 2013 and 2017 Palawan ranked as No.1 in Travel + Leisure World Best Island while Boracay landed on the 3rd spot. Filmmakers and other tourists were captivated by the hidden beauty of our beautiful islands. Not only once that foreign film was shot in the Philippines; Naked Weapon in 2002, some scene was shot in Subic, Zambales; Romantic Island starring Eugene and Lee Min Ki and directed by  Cheol-Woo Kang was shot in Boracay: Mango Tree directed by  Lee Soo-Sung was shot in Cebu.




The Tourism Promotions Board (TPB ), an attached agency of the Department of Foreign Affairs  (DOT ) under Chief Operating Officer Cesar Montano gave recognition to eight Filipino-made and two foreign movies that showcased the beauty and charisma of the Philippines and helped promote the Philippine Tourism through their film.

Cine Turismo, the newest campaign of Tourism Promotions Board under COO Cesar Montano, will give recognition and honor Filipino directors and films that were shown in 2016 and 2017. Inline with this new campaign of the Tourism Promotions Board is to give light to the pending Film Tourism Bill ( SB 1330 ) sponsored by Senador Grace Poe and was introduced by Senator Sonny Angara, which recognizes the "potential of all international and local motion picture production to create more jobs, grow the economy, and raise the nation's international profile".

Cesar Montano says " Film Tourism is a steadily growing industry in the country Cine Turismo is a project created to acknowledge the many films and filmmakers that, through their wonderful portrayals of the Philippines, have aroused interest and boosted the tourism in a local tourist spot "



Films that received recognition and was honored are:
  • Sakaling Hindi Makarating - Directed by Ice Idanan and shot in Ilocos, Siquijor, Batanes, and Zamboanga
  • Lakbay2Love - Directed by Ellen Ongkeko Marfil, showcased the beauty of Timberland Height and Benguet
  • Camp Sawi - Directed by IreneVillamor, was set in Bantayan Island
  • Patay na si Hesus  - Directed by Victor Villanueva
  • Apocalypse Child - Directed by Mario Cornejo and film was set in Baler
  • Siargao  - Directed by Paul Soriano, which also showcased the beauty of Siargao
  • Requited - Directed by Nerissa Picadizo which features Mt. Pinatubo
  • Kiko Boksingero -Was filmed  in Baguio and directed by Top Nazareno
A special citation was also given to two South Korean Films that showcased and promote the beauty of the Philippines.
  • Romantic Island - shot in Boracay and directed by Cheol-Woo Kang
  • Mango Tree - directed by Lee Soo-Sung



Honorees have bee chosen based on the following criteria
  1. Made by Filipino production house
  2. A full-length film( minimum of 75 minutes)
  3. Commercially released within the last two years
  4. Was shown in the Philippines or international Film Festival
  5. Showcases the destination extensively or be a setting for the majority of the scene
  6. Portrays the country in a positive manner, provides a general awareness of the locale and has created a positive impact in the community and perception in its people.
  7. Has promoted and preserved culture and heritage and reflects the country's history; enriches Filipino values and traits such as resilience, the Bayanihan spirit, hospitality and patriotism
  8. Has generated revenues and create jobs in their locations as well as new trade and businesses

Our Filipino films are one of the powerful tools that we can use to introduce to people our Filipino culture, heritage and the beauty of our country.
With this new campaign spearheaded by the Tourism Promotions Board not only filmmakers were able to shot in tourist spots, it also assists and helps the livelihood of locals.
