Greener Malls, Cleaner Cities: SM Scales Up Its Recycling Machine Network
MANILA, Philippines — A
used plastic bottle doesn't have to end its life in a landfill. Drop it into
the right machine at an SM mall, and it becomes raw material for something else
entirely.
How the Program Works
SM Cares, through the SM Green
Movement, has partnered with recycling technology company Sparklo to install SM
Green Recycling Machines in 30 SM Supermalls nationwide. The machines are
reverse vending units: shoppers feed in eligible plastic bottles and get
rewards in return, turning an ordinary mall visit into a small, repeatable act
of waste management. The aim is to keep recyclable material in circulation
instead of in landfills.
Where to Find Them
The machines are already
running in malls across Metro Manila, Batangas, Laguna, Cavite, Bulacan,
Pampanga, Baguio, Pangasinan, La Union, Rizal, and Cebu — putting them within
reach of shoppers in most of SM's key regional markets, not just the capital.
Part of a Larger Push
Each bottle deposited is a
small transaction, but the program is built on the idea that small, repeated
choices — made by families, students, and everyday mallgoers — add up to real
environmental impact over time. The initiative sits under the SM Cares Environmental
Sustainability Program's Waste Management Pillar, alongside existing efforts
like the Trash to Cash Program and the Plastic Waste Collection Program, as
part of SM's broader push toward a waste-free future.
With Sparklo's technology and SM's mall network behind
it, recycling stops being a chore and starts becoming a habit — one bottle, and
one better choice, at a time.
