Dengue is Real, Keep Your Child Safe with OFF! Lotion

Our Family is always our top priority. It was September of 2015 when my daughter was hospitalized and turned out to be positive for Dengue, as a mom I was so scared. Nurses always come in to our room every 6 hours to get blood sample from my daughter for them to monitor her platelet count.

It was an unpleasant sight for me to see my daughter in that condition at her young age. When my daughter cries due to the pain of needle inserted to her skin, it was a more painful scene and sound for me, wishing that all of what I see and hear are not real, it was really heart breaking.

It was that same month in which Dengue case was really prominent and a lot of kids are being rushed to the same hospital to be treated, we stayed in the hospital for more than a week for my daughter's recovery and since then, I always said to my self "Never Again" that I will allow this to happen and was thankful to God that she guided my daughter

Before our stay in the hospital, these were the symptoms that my daughter showed

1. High Fever 39° c - 40 ° c from 1st day
2. Vomiting
3. Stomach Pain
4. Headache
5. Rashes

I always make sure to apply OFF! Lotion for Kids before reading her bedtime stories. I know that she's protected from mosquitoes when she sleeps.

I have been aware of few Dengue cases in our area, I tried to be vigilant and monitored my daughter's temperature and checked for any dengue symptoms and on the third day of her fever, We decided to consult a pediatrician and was confirmed that it was dengue

While we were on the hospital, my husband did a general cleaning at our house and made sure that we can lessen or avoid any mosquitoes

I also made sure that my daughter always have "OFF! Lotion for kids" and "OFF! Lotion Overtime" for my husband and I to keep away mosquitoes and make sure that my family is always protected with these disease carrying mosquitoes.

Chelsea also loves to visit a coffee shop in Baclaran which has an outdoor garden. I always tell her, we should apply OFF! Lotion for Kids before we can play and run in the area so that she can be protected from mosquitoes.

After the dengue incident, I become paranoid about mosquitoes that's why I'm thankful that there is OFF! Lotion that we can use to protect my daughter Chelsea from mosquitoes. I feel more confident of letting her go out and play, enjoy her childhood.

Chelsea and I love OFF! Lotion because of its tropical scent, it doesn't irritate her skin and the effect lasts long. Using OFF! Lotion is now one of our daily habit or regimen. I don't have to worry about mosquito bites, dengue, zika and other deadly diseases from these mosquitoes. as long as I have OFF! Lotion with me and in our house I feel worry free, but of course I also encourage all mommies and daddies to have a clean environment, so we can avoid these disease carrying mosquitoes in your area.

If you have same experience , hope you can share it also. What are your tips and suggestions to keep your loveone  safe from Insect bites and mosquitoes.

Again, as always thank you so much guys for visiting my page. I hope you enjoyed your stay. Please always do visit my blog for more of my adventures inside and outside my little kitchen. This is your Kitchen Mom, Dhess . . see you on my next adventure .
Mwuah! Love lots! 💖

Hi there. Thanks for posting, and I'm sorry about your daughter's dengue scare. However, while I agree with you about keeping your environment clean, I am not a fan of OFF! lotion because of the chemicals, especially DEET.

Here's some tips on how we as a family keep dengue at bay:

For skin, we mix virgin coconut oil (VCO) with peppermint extract and use that instead of OFF!. There's a commercial product called Moringa Oil (see my blog post also listed on Filipino Bloggers) that is great as well. Not only does this keep mosquitoes away, it also moisturizes skin.

Internally, I suggest 3 things:
#1: reduce junk food and sweets, as they tend to lower the immune system.
#2: have a diet high in medium-chain and short-chain fatty acids. These attack the dengue virus in your system, killing it. Best sources are mature coconut (where you make "gata" and VCO from), grass fed butter, kefir.
#3: Stay well hydrated and have a diet high in Vitamin C - self explanatory.

Hi Carlo. Thank you for your tips and suggestions, I'll keep that in mind.
I'm using OFF Lotion for Kids which has only 7.5% deet. From what I've read the maximum concentration recommended for children 2 months and up is 30 %.
Because of that experience I use mosquito net, long sleeve shirt and pajamas/pants for Chelsea and do everything to boost her immune system.

Dami na ding biktima sa amin ang Dengue including my husband who came on a short vacation that time, di pinatawad. Somebody told us that quail eggs help increase the platelet, we tried and it worked. 4 days later okay na ulit platelet nya.
The Kitchen Mom said…
Good to know Na OK Na ang husband mo Mitch.
Quail Eggs din yung pinakain ko Kay Chelsea nung bumagsak na yung platelet nya and tawa2* tea. After nun tumaas Na uli platelet nya.
Right now may case Na rin ng Zika dito SA akin kaya kahit kami sobrang nag-iingat since wala talagang gamot ang Dengue.

The fight against dengue should continue since people especially children are afflicted with it on a daily basis. I had my bout with Dengue too and recently last November my little boy was a victim. Ahh..the dreaded dengue is very much prevalent and the best way to fight this is by prevention. Off lotion is one way to keep dengue at bay. (macy)

My firstborn was also hospitalized because of dengue. And we werent aware that he had dengue prior to that. It only showed on the blood test results.

Anyway, after that incident, we always use insect repellent patches when going out. We also use an electric mosquito catcher. We do not want any of our boys to suffer what our eldest suffered. Once is enough.

Dengue is really scarry. Whenever we go out, I carry with me a an inse t repellant too, but I use Human Nature citronella spray which I find more convenient.
I always have OFF lotion in my travel bags, and regular supply at home. Also keeping the surroundings super tidy will help to elliminate the growth of mosquitos.

Hi Blair, it's best if we always have an insect repellent in our bag every time we go out. Some places have lots of mosquitoes.

Hi Berlin, actually with Chelsea was rare the platelet is still in normal level but she already have the rashes in the 4th day. I agree, once enough.

Hello. Not a fan of Off Lotion. I use the Bug Shield DEET-free oil of Human Nature. You can check it out here: http://humanheartnature.com/buy/index.php/protective-care/100-natural-bug-shield-deet-free-oil.html

Sharing if you want to look at an alternative brand.
hayyy I'm terrified of dengue! kakainis dito sa min, there are no mosquitoes, promise! as in we can leave our doors and windows open and there won't be mosquitoes. pero yung neighbor namin, nagkadengue, waaah! same compound as ours.

Thank you for the tips. However, I don't also use Off lotion with my kids. I love that its affordable and available, I opted to use a 100% Natural Organic Citronella oil. It works both ways kasi, I can spray it around the house and use it directly sa skin nila without irritation kahit they have very sensitive skin. One more thing, the oil has a soothing scent, parang nasa spa ang amoy.

My daughter recently acquired fever and I was pretty sure it was dengue. It waived by the 3rd day, but the scare it gave me as she cried and cried "Mommy! Mommy!" in pain was far too unbearable. I love OFF so that's what I also use for our protection.

Dengue is something we need to be protected of. Its nice that there are insect repellent lotion nowadays to help us.
Not just dengue, but also Zika!!! How scary that there are already Zika cases in the Philippines!
In our house naman, I use an air diffuser with citronella oil. But in places where I feel mosquitoes abound, we're armed with insect repellant like Off or other brands. I like Off's smell, too. What I'm not too fond of is that it's sticky.

Even you clean your own house there is huge possibility that dengue may still hit your daughter. School, the whole neighbourhood may not be clean as it seem.

Good thing you have additional preventive measure like applying anti-mosquito lotion.
I'm so happy that we don't have Dengue here in Sweden. Mosquitos we have a lot of, luckily they do not spread any major viruses.

I remember having this in the house growing up. There are a lot of mosquitoes in our house in Baguio as well due to the garden at the back of the house. So far, we haven't had a case of dengue in the family. I usually use citronella patches for my son, though. Trying to avoid lotions as he always try to lick it off his skin. :P
never experienced the scare of dengue in our family but I always make sure that I have enough stocks of mosquito repellent in the house. Whenever one of us or we are going out - husband to work or kids to school - I give them a sachet of OFF lotion, laging may OFF sa mga bags namin, better safe than sorry.

Yikes! That must have been a scary experience for you and your daughter. I understand wanting to take precautions especially after that experience; however, I agree with others and wonder about the chemicals (DEET).

We've used products with citronella. Years ago, I was told by older relatives that if I did not want mosquitoes to bother me, I should eat a lot of garlic. Apparently, mosquitoes can "smell" or "sense" the garlic and do not like it. Yes, I have seen this work. A nice alternative today is that one can purchase garlic pills and take garlic as a supplement if they don't like to eat garlic (alone or with other foods).
How scary! So glad she is ok. Parenting is so difficult and heart wrenching sometimes! We live in the woods so we last year we lathered up in bug spray. This year I have a new weapon... Chickens!!!! Yep they eat everything. I hope they help with the ticks too!

Oh my goodness! I can only imagine how scary that was for you and your little one! I have heard about dengue but didn't really know what it was until your post. Nutri 10 Plus, Vitamins Perfect For Child's Growing Needs

Summer is already here. The temperature last week was 34°c and its getting hotter everyday. We have to open our windows to make sure that we won't get suffocated because of the heat. Summer is also the season of flu, bacteria that can cause cough and build up of phlegm. Kids should always be geared with proper protection. Their body needs protection from harmful diseases. That's why I was so thankful that I used Nutri 10 vitamins for my Chelsea. This is the kind of vitamins that she really need. For sure most of you know that Chelsea is a picky eater. A quick trip down holiday memory lane

Can you feel it? The cold breeze, holiday songs, festive decorations, and colorful lights and lanterns… it’s Christmas season, everybody! Filipinos are known to celebrate Christmas the longest – it starts with the BER months and ends in January. Along with parties and get-togethers, we also have different traditions to celebrate the yuletide season. Since I was a kid, I associated grapes and round fruits with the holiday season. My grandma used to buy a lot of grapes during the BER months and placed them on our table along with other fruits. The grapes were also hung on windows and doors to help bring in good fortune for the coming year. I remember her asking me who was eating the grapes as she noticed that they were slowly “disappearing” and I said it must have been my aunties and our cat. But… It was silly me all along, of course! My aunties ended up buying more, much to my delight.   For Christmas eve, my aunties and grandma would make their delicious fruit salad – a huge can of f
